Being Prepared for Portland’s ‘Big One’

The Cascadia Subduction Zone (CSZ) is capable of producing some of the largest earthquakes in the world, and Portland residents need to be prepared for when the ‘Big One’ happens.

This story map walks through the hazards and how to prepare. It maps Portland’s bridges and how they are expected to fare in a large earthquake, covers building an emergency kit, and includes an interactive web map where residents can find their neighborhood BEECN. BEECNs (Basic Earthquake Emergency Communication Nodes) are sites around Portland set up to provide communication and information when an earthquake knocks out the usual channels.
